Rocklands, Queens Road, Aberystwyth
« on: Tuesday 07 November 17 13:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi Nice People,  Having tried to find out about my grandfathers' past I have finally got his
death certificate. It tells me that he died on the 16th of August 1944 at ROCKLANDS, Queens Road,
Aberystwyth.
As the fates would have it I happened to standing in Queens Road when I was told by the lovely
lady in the registrars office where it was . So, I walked up and down Queens Road but couldn't
find Rocklands. I've also found his date of birth, but I can't find out where so I could get his birth
certificate. His birthdate was 30th November 1878 and it was somewhere close to where he died.
So, I'd like to know where Rocklands is and where David Davies was born on the 30th November
1878, or directions where to look. Thank you - Keith
Davies, Hollis, Rogers, Looker, Elias,

Hello

Do you know when he got married?  The certificate should give the name of his father to start looking on census etc

Where has his exact date of birth come from without a certificate?

Appreciate David Davies isn't the easiest name to work with.

There are a few birth options - did he ever use a middle name or just plain David

All Aberystwyth registrations

Google Earth shows Rocklands as a stone built house on the right hand side of Queens Road, past the registry office (Queens Hotel) heading north towards Constitution Hill.

Keith,

By reference to the adjacent addresses in the 1939 Register, it looks as though Rockland was next door to (or at least close by) the Boar's Head Hotel.

Correspondingly, searching for Rockland today brings up a mention of a Rockland House in Queen's Road which, looking at street view, is situated behind the Glengower Hotel and next door to what used to be* the Boar's Head - the pub frontage of which is still clearly evident [*it closed in 2001].

Hi Nice People,
Thank you for your help so far and I will try to answer your questions
He married my Grandmother, Mary,  on the 30th Jan 1901 at Christ Church, Hoxton, London
She died in 1929 . He re-married in Mid 1935 a lady named Alice Bird in Hackney, London (as per 1939 census)
with whom he lived in 148 Graham Road, Hackney ( which is where I got his birthdate as 30th November 1878 until, while on a home visit he died in Aberystwyth and is supposed to be buried in Aberffrwd cemetery.
I don't think either he or his father had (either a David or a Daniel) had
a middle name.  My cousin says he was "laid out" in a flat above a Garage
in Queens Road that's no longer there. Cousin was only 5 at time.
