Finding a probate/admin. and Coroners report WA
« on: Tuesday 07 November 17 15:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello (again)

I wonder if some kind person could advise me whether or not it is possible to get a hold of a Coroners report from 1975.  Looking on-line it sounds like after 10 years they are destroyed.  Is that correct?

Also, with regard to any Probate/Administration I've read that these are closed for 75 years, again could someone clarify this for me.

If any of these are obtainable could you please tell me where I where i would need to look.

Thanks so much,
CD

hi CD,

Here is link to W.A. State Archives http://www.sro.wa.gov.au/archive-collection/searching-our-new-database-system

I think this is where you are likely to find probates and inquests (but not certain)

Hi rosball

Thanks for the link.  So the Probate/Admin IS closed for 75 years.

The Coroners Reports are a bit confusing, it says  Police Station records with coroners reports restricted for 25 years in line with the WA Police Records Retention and Disposal (R&D)schedule.

So  the event I'm looking for occurred more than 25 years ago, so  guess I need to see if where I can find the Police Station records with coroners reports....

While probate files relating to wills and letters of administration are restricted for 75 years, the registers which contain the copy of the document are available for public use.  Read through this link.

Inquests

There may be a report in a West Australian newspaper if you have details of the person's name and date of death.

Thanks for this information cando.

The inquest I want is 1975 and looking carefully information reads that these have been destroyed after 10 years and the suggestions they offer don't appear cover my date.

Probate/Administration registers looks like I would need to be view on microfilm at State Library of WA

With regard to the newspaper collection I've searched TROVE is there anywhere you or anyone else could think of?

Thanks once again,
CD

I emailed the WA archives about a will/administration some years ago & they sent me back a scan of the document (it was from 1920s - so much older than yours) and some additional info about the family.  I found their response excellent. Don't know if they now charge for sending scans (many places do) but certainly worth an email.
