1871 census Chorlton-on-Medlock:  baby James A. R. Neill was with his widowed mother Mary.
1881 census Salford: James A. R. Neill was with sister Edith.  Head of household & stepfather was  John E. Alton.

Death registration Salford 1871 Robert Neill, aged 36.

Butchers on 1891 census:
James H. Neale , Didsbury, Chorlton
William Neale, Salford
John R. O'Neill (20), Chorlton, Hulme was a carter for a butcher.

Hi Maiden Stone,
Do you have the 1871 reference. I can’t find it. You have mother Mary but 1881 refers to Margaret.
I noticed 1881 family last night but discounted them. Edith seems to be Edith Renton Neill mmn Worthington and James is James Albert Robert mmn Worthington.
Edith gives her father as Thomas Wood Neill, deceased on her marriage in 1887. I don’t think that is the right family.

Thank you everyone for trying to help.  The 1872 West Derby Robert James O'Neill is not the right one as I found his baptismal record and his parents are Marguette and Laurence .  I think you are right he must have been registered somewhere with a different variation of surname. He may have grown up in Chorlton but actually been born and registered elsewhere e.g. his mother's hometown.
Thank you for your help
Jenn

According to the opening post he died in 1927 unless that’s a typo and should be 1937

1871 family were at 1 Kingsmount ? St., Chorlton on Medlock. RG 10/3990/F  pages 159-160.
I read the mother's name as Mary E. but having squinted at it again I agree it could have been Margaret. The only name I made out with certainty was Edith.
The mother was definitely Margaret on 1881, then married to John E. Alton and living at 17 Vere St. Salford with Edith R.  and James A. R. Neil.    RG 11/3977/F

Thanks M S. I see now why I couldn’t find the family. On mine he is transcribed as Jera R Mell  ::)

However, I don’t think it is the right one.
It’s a difficult one this.
