Also the 'y' in (is it?) 'O'Reilly'. I think it's more likely a 'g' as in Wiggy's suggestion of 'Strong'.

thankyou, good point. It is the same on the end of the minters name as well. So assume it is then a g, the only other g is in Church of England but it turns back for the l.

So now options are

Stireg
Strueg
Stewg
Steerg
Main family interests are Vagg and Rowe. Also Lavers, Huckel, Barraclough. All families were in Australia, NSW, VIC and WA.

It's a difficult one as the 3rd & 4th letters look very similar to the 'ur' in Church  :-\

It may be just inconsistency by this dreadful writer but I thought I'd throw this in just in case: in both instances of Matthew and Eliza's surnames there appears to be one more (small) loop in Eliza's surname than in Matthew's - so that his looks like s-t-u-r-g and hers looks like s-t-u-r-y.
