Anyone recognise this seaside town?
« on: Wednesday 08 November 17 01:15 GMT (UK) »
Taken in the 1930s I think - before the war.
My parents used to go on holidays a lot - within the UK so could be anywhere!

Thanks very much

The big building behind, which looks rather like a large hotel - is it my imagination, or is it just a shell, missing roof and windows?

I've been looking at a few large seaside hotels (Coatham, Redcar; Birkdale Palace and Royal Clifton, Southport) but haven't found one that matches.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I live in Southport and it looks very familiar. The building in the background could be the Victoria Hotel ( now demolished) which had a middle part that was taller than the other sides.

Tomorrow I 'll go and check the lamp post, walls and shelters etc.

Just looking again and there seems to be a ?church tower which doesn't seem quite right but I'll check it out tomorrow.

I don't know Southport or how any of these hotels fit into their surroundings, so local knowledge will be invaluable.

It was seeing the tower in pictures of the Royal Clifton that made me wonder if it could be that, but I couldn't see any other strong similarities.

Is the windowless place on the right, in front of the 'hotel like building', an old castle/keep wall by any chance?

That's a clock tower on that building isn't it?

Have to admit, I thought it was Southport, too?
But couldn't find anything to back up my suspicion.

Good evening,

Is the windowless place on the right, in front of the 'hotel like building', an old castle/keep wall by any chance?

It's tiled roofs Wiggy, you can see the chimneys quite plainly and at the left hand side the gable ends.

Just been to have a look and although the lamp posts and seats look similar I can't find the rocky side yo the path or the right type of buildings. Our shelters have very distinctive roofs and they're not quite the same as in the picture.

However I have had another idea and may not have been in the right place do will try again over the weekend when hopefully it's not as windy and cold!

PS any more photos taken at the same time as that might help?
