I have just been through the burials from 1617 to 1637 and found six of these marks, all at different times of year, and entered by two different parsons. The link between them does seem to be that they were all from families of "Sir" or "Mr" So and So. And one was the parson. In fact I had seen the symbol some time ago next to his name and thought it was a cross for a man in holy orders. So it looks as if it is just marking the important people.

No idea but here are some guesses:-

Buried within the church? Buried in a crypt? Buried in a mausoleum?

As it seems to relate to gentry and clergy it may have meant they were buried inside the church. Just a guess. A cross inside a circle: cross = church;  circle = church walls ?
