Abbreviations found on census return
« on: Thursday 09 November 17 11:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Hope I've posted in the right place:- my query regards the attached census return - the address is clear enough, being Park Lane, Macclesfield, however does anyone know what the 4H/10C relates to - is it part of the address, (maybe a flat or in a courtyard behind the street) or is it just the remunerator's notes?

Many thanks

Michelle

Don't know exactly but it looks like one property 353 Park Lane split into separate households perhaps
The first couple then 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 other families.

Initially I thought 4th house in Court 10 - but these houses were huge with shared communal yards - a row of them, standing side by side - so I do believe the one property was split into separate households - some of them are still used as flats - its the 10C that's irking me lol

Streetview

353 Park Lane is the white house. There are clearly some more houses behind it.  They appear now to be 2,3,4 Harrops Place, but perhaps it wasn't always the case. http://tinyurl.com/y8nqkv8j

The 1874 1:500 map seems to show them as being in Court No.10

You will need to zoom in or out a bit to see it https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/390973/372864/13/100100

This is the entry for 441 Park Lane in the 1891 Census, 353 just has one occupant.

Yes a courtyard consisting of mostly back to back houses.
So house no. 4 in court no. 10.
Over time the postal addresses changed to make them easier to find & became for example 4 Bk. of 27 such & such St.
