Help to find a birth record in Paris January 1871 Please
« on: Thursday 09 November 17 17:47 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

Can anyone advise me how I would go about finding a birth record, during the Seige of Paris 1870 -1871 ? or even if such a thing would exist.  I have an exact date of birth, but looking for parentage, otherwise this line of my family finishes here  :'(

The newborn and mother returned to England after the Seige finished.

Thanks
Wendi

Of course, with pleasure. you can go and search in the "Archives de Paris", they are digitized. But , many of them were burnt in the burning of the Hotel De Ville (Town Hall) during the Commune  (civil riot).

Can you give the data you have?
I will search for you if you don't read french.

Merci joger  :)

My reading of French is poor, so I will thank you if you can try for me please.

Marie Winifred Brady was born in France 13th January 1871 to Marie Emelia Brady nee Derick (could be english spelling as the Derick comes from her english wedding certificate) her father Louis Derick.

The family story is that Marie Emelia Brady ate rats during the Seige of Paris, therefore I am assuming her daughter was born there.  She also remembered seeing the Air Balloons flying out of the city.  - aren't family stories lovely!

Any help you can give joger will be much appreciated.

It certainly is true for the rats.

Till now I have not found any Brady, Derick, or Derrick, born in Paris ( 1862-1872), in any of the 20 "arrondissements" of Paris.
But maybe the child was registered at the consulate and not at the french Town Hall .
Or the child was born in a suburb of Paris and not intra muros.

Ancestry has the registers for English BMD abroad, have a look there if you can , or ask for a look-up.

I'll try 1873 and after ,tomorrow.

Morning joger, and thank you.

Please do not trouble yourself with 1873, I had overlooked the fact that her birth was probably registered in the overseas register, I will search that.

With regard to Marie Emelia Derick, she was French, born about 1848 in St. Azair, France.  This information from various sources, but not verified.  She married in London in 1870 and from that wedding certificate comes her fathers name Louis Derick.

Kind regards
Wendi

Ooh! Thank you  :)

Evidently it was not compulsory to register a birth until 1875 so perhaps the 1871 birth was never recorded. I could not find her in the overseas registers.

Thanks for your interest and time joger!

It was compulsory since 1539( king Francois 1er).
