Chief Rent - Saddleworth Yorkshire?
« on: Friday 10 November 17 01:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am confused as to what a Chief Rental is. Some information refers to it as a rent-charge and some as a fee paid by a freeholder to the Lord in lieu of services.

I have an ancestor listed on a Chief Rental for the years 1785 to 1789
From 1785 to 1788 he pays 6 shillings. In 1789 it increases to 2 pounds 6 shillings.

Thanks
Karen

Chief Rents were customary rents paid by freeholders to the manorial lord.

Service. A general term for a duty, obligation or due resulting from a tenant's occupancy of land or buildings belonging to a manorial lord. A villein, or unfree tenant gave labour service on a number of days customary in the manor, and also gave produce in lieu of rent........A free tenant was anciently obliged to perform military service. Most services were commuted to money payments.

My father-in-law grew up on Tyneside and used to recall monthly visits from a collector who would say "Ah've coom fer the chief" on the doorstep.

Hi Stan

Thank you. Makes sense as he was a freeholder.
