So are you saying you have no marriage or death for him? I can't see a death on the CWGC site.

It was his brother James who died in WW1

1901 - living with parents Edward & Catherine.

There is no birth registration for him or brother James.  1901 shows him aged 13 b Derbyshire and James aged 11 also Derbyshire

Brother Martin aged 1 has mothers maiden name Ford and there is an 1884 marriage in Lincolnshire between Edward Dowd & Kate Ford but GRO online show no male Dowd/Ford births 1887-1889

1891 census does not have George in household and as there are children born before 1884 - Edward was presumably married previously.  In 1881 Edward is unmarried

Edward Dowd   42 b All Saints Derbyshire
Kate 32 b Birmingham
Charlotte    10 b Alfreston
Maria C    8 b Lincoln
Mary Ellen    6 b Lincoln mmn Ford
James 2 b St Alkmund
Margaret 10mths St Alkmund - mmn = Ford

A Catherine Dowd was b 1886 Derbyshire - no death but she is not on 1891

James' birth is on the GRO index in 1888 as DOUD, mmn Ford.

Catherine's death is also in 1888 and also as Doud.

Not finding anything for a George though.

I remember seeing some years ago that there are records detailing the reasons for not enlisting (medical grounds, age etc).  I am kicking myself that I didn't keep the details, but perhaps someone here may know?

"..I have an ancestor of fighting age in 1914 but I cant find any record of him 'joining up'."

Conscription started in 1916.

In 1901 George is shown as 13 and James 11.  We now know James was born 1888 and Margaret 1890 which doesn’t leave a lot of room for another birth so clearly George was born approx 2 years before James.  I am actually wondering whether he was surname Dowd

If this is Martin in 1911, Edward (father) claims to be born in Ireland:

Exemption reasons are in the first schedule to the Military Service Act 1916 - the Act is on the National Archive website:
