Why wasnt my Great Uncle in WW1 theatre of war??
« on: Saturday 11 November 17 23:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi All..I have an ancestor of fighting age in 1914 but I cant find any record of him 'joining up'.
I realise he may not have enlisted etc but was conscription compulsory during this time?

His brother signed up at an early age  and ultimately died as a POW.

Any suggestions??

A medical problem perhaps? Flat feet, poor eyesight etc.

Or perhaps he was in a Reserved Occupation?

Over 60% of WW1 service records were burnt during the WW2 blitz - perhaps that's why you can't find anything on him

As his brother died - his details will be held on the cwgc.org website

I agree with Carole, that is probably the reason.

The Medal Roll Index has 5 entries for George Dowd and one for George E in various regiments.  If he was from Derbyshire it's a possibility he enlisted in a Yorkshire regiment for which there are 2 entries

The MRI does not show birthplaces - only rank, regiment and service number

What regiment was his brother in?
