Anne McNamara
« on: Sunday 12 November 17 05:38 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for information about Anne McNamara was born about 1844 in County Clare, Ireland to Daniel McNamara and Julia White.

She emigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in about 1863. I haven't got any record of the immigration. In 1867, in Parramatta, she married Daniel Carroll (abt 1841-1875) (son of John Carroll + Mary McGrath, born Tipperary).

When Anne died in 1884 (Waterloo, Sydney), her brother, Mr P.A. MacNamara placed a notice in the newspaper. I'm assuming that he also lived in Sydney or at least Australia. Both Anne and her husband Daniel were buried in the Roman Catholic cemetery in Petersham.

Anne + Daniel Carroll had 4 daughters - Mary Ann, Julia/Joannah, Elizabeth and Margaret.

If anyone has any information on this family, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, P A Macnamara needed to live in Sydney or be able to get to Sydney quickly, (no telephones, no motor cars) to have been able to place the funeral notice in the Sydney Morning Herald in time for it to be published in that edition.    I say this because the NSW BDM online index has the option to determine the date of death.  It deduces to 13 August 1884 for  Ann's death at Waterloo #5595 and that matches the image of the certified copy uploaded at reply #1

lechristo,
Are you able to tell us anything more about Daniel CARROLL?

I can see about three deaths in the correct name in 1875.

One has the right parents.

Had you located a death notice if there was one at all?

Margaret seems to have been born close to the time of her father's death

Is that correct?

Sue

Hi Ballydw,

Any info on Anne or Daniel (Australian descendants or Irish Ancestry) would be appreciated. I have got their death certificates and their marriage certificate and some information from the Tipperary Emigrants website.

And I did look up some Irish baptism records and think that maybe Daniel was part of the following family -

John Carroll b. 1831
Mary Carroll b. 1834
Daniel Carroll b. 1836
James Carroll b. 1840
Anne Carroll b. 1843

Parents are John Carroll (farmer) and Mary McGrath/Magrath. I have a marriage record for their marriage in 1838 but I'm not 100% sure if this is them.

I'm assuming 'Uncle John Mcgrath' who sponsored Daniel and his sister Ann to come to Australia was their mother, Mary's brother. But that's all the information I have. I don't know where John and Mary were born or died.

And I have even less information on Anne McNamara except her brother was P.A. McNamara and parents Daniel McNamara (a stonemason) and Julia White. The information about birthplace of County Clare came from Daniel + Ann's daughter's birth certificate. It says on her death certificate that she had been in Australia 21 years when she died. That means she must have emigrated about 1863.

There is also mention of a Martin Hogan who is apparently Daniel Carroll's 2nd cousin. He was the informant on Daniel's death certificate and he also put notices in the newspaper when the McGraths died and Ann Carroll(nee McNamara) died.  I'm not sure how he fits in the family tree. He was also related in some way to 'Uncle' John McGrath. And John McGrath was apparently tied up with Parramatta 'Fort' School.

So many dots which need connecting!
