Hi,

I am trying to get hold of a "map" showing Heslington Street Moss Side around 1950?

My parents lived there as newly weds after WWII before migrating to Australia.

The street seems to have disappeared from all the current "maps" I can find.

I have found a written reference in Slater's Manchester, Salford & Suburban Directory, 1911 but no actual "map".

Any help and direction would be appreciated.

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

This is a map showing the street in 1915 but I would think it would be much the same in 1950 http://maps.nls.uk/view/126522863#zoom=5&lat=4420&lon=13420&layers=BT

Added - a side by side map showing the same map with a parallel aerial overlay http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=17&lat=53.4574&lon=-2.2428&layers=6&right=BingHyb

Welcome to rootschat laopa.  :)

I don't know the location of Heslington Street, but if you do, it might be worth having a look here:
http://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/#zoom=14.700805822087643&lat=53.4622&lon=-2.2523&layers=102&b=1&point=55.1512,-6.4119

You can change the map series from the menu on the left panel. Detail varies. You can also compare old and new side by side maps with the option at the top of the screen.

Another site to check is https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/

If you have any idea where Hesligton Street used to be, let me know the rough location and I will help if I can.

Thanks to Kay's find I've worked out that Heslington St might be under the site of the Millenium Green:
http://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/#zoom=16.800616986056014&lat=53.4574&lon=-2.2425&layers=102&b=1&point=55.1512,-6.4119

(Side by side maps not working for me atm as I am on ipad but if you select the side by side option then choose one of the maps from the series on the left, you shoukd be able to find it's exact location)l

NLS have a map
http://maps.nls.uk/view/102339522

If you look at the bottom right corner of the map you will see Moss Side it is just above a horizontal street (Great Western Street)
Above Moss Side there is a bowling Green marked hesslington Street is on the left hand side of the bowling Green.
I think it was demolished in the 1970s when the were building motorways through Manchester and knocking down the old terraces and back to back houses.
Cheers
Guy

PS Google Maps shows it would have been where the Vine Life Church is now situated see

Hi Everyone,

Many thanks to all. What a fantastic response and brilliant references.

It now seems pretty clear that Heslington Street Moss Side and the related houses were demolished and turned into part of Moss Side Millennium Green.

That has resolved one of my open questions.

Out of curiosity was the current Saint James Church Moss Side always that specific building/church and location?

Back to work digging and following the trail.

Hi,

Number 16. Not sure how long before or after but certainly for 1950. They could only have been there at earliest post late 1945 = end WWII.
