Researching Ship Information
« on: Sunday 12 November 17 18:48 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

My ancestor's left Scotland in 1818 aboard the Brig Prince William. The ship's manifest lists New Castle on the Tyne and Leith as departure points. I've done multiple searches to understand and learn about this particular ship; i.e. size, owner, time it took to get to Philadelphia in the US and other information so I can understand and appreciate what the trip was like. I've been able to find nothing about the ship. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

That is great, thank you. I think this is it, given the ship's captain is the same in the advertisement and on the manifest. Can you look up or tell me how to locate this newspaper? I'm wondering if there is an advertisement for the same ship closer to the August 31, 1818 (US arrival) date. I'd love to find out how long the trip took, find any writings about on board ship conditions, etc. Thank you again, I appreciate your work!

Hello OH,

That advert Cathy found you may have been for PRINCE WILLIAM's previous voyage as there is another newspaper mention at Newspapers.com (subscription site) in the Evening Post of New York City on Friday 31 July 1818 "At Leith, Prince William, Davis for Philadelphia".

Cheers,
Westoe
