German Ancestors - Hohenzollern Sigmaringen, Help Finding Records Needed.
« on: Sunday 12 November 17 19:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

After about 23 years of searching to find out where in Germany my 3x gt grandfather came from, I finally found out a couple of days ago! Now however, I am needing some assistance as regards finding the appropriate German records.

My 3x gt grandfather Francis Xavier Bauer (1810/11-1881) it transpires came from Hohenzollern Sigmaringen, a small state in South Western Germany. His father (from his English marriage cert) was Fidel Bauer, a ropemaker by trade. Francis himself was a Shoemaker/Bootmaker.

I have been advised that Fidel is not a common name in Germany. Bearing this in mind I have found a couple of marriages for a Fidel in Hohenzollern Sigmaringen on both Ancestry & Familysearch as follows:

1, Fidelis Bauer to Legatha Kronenbitter on 28th Sept 1790 in Dettingen, Hohenzollern, Germany

2, Fidel Bauer to Rosalia Rapp on 16th Feb 1813 in Dettingen, Hohenzollern, Germany

Both to the same man or father & son?

I would love to be able to view the originals of these records & also any baptisms &/or burials, not to mention any other records that might be available & useful. Can anyone help? I am not particularly familiar with German records.

Naturally, having got this far I am eager to try get further back! ;D Who wouldn't want to!! ;D

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

David

if you let me know exactly what you are looking for I´ll try to throw some light on it from this side.
I´m a member of a very good German forum, maybe someone there can help.

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave,

That is extremely kind of you & very much appreciated indeed.

I am basically looking for anything to do with the family. Initially a baptism for Francis Xavier Bauer would be fantastic, also anything as regards the two marriages noted below so that I can determine as to whether or not they are the right family!

I basically do not know anything about his mother, not even a name! Neither do I know anything as regards siblings of Francis.

Anything that could be found would be fantastic.

My thanks again for you very kind assistance, it is very much appreciated indeed.

Kind regards

David

Hi David

Franz Xaver and Fidelis are very common catholic names.
If your ancestors were catholic look here.

The parish records for Sigmaringen and Dettingen can be viewed in any LDS Family Search Centre

Sigmaringen - Catholic
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/272865?availability=Family%20History%20Library

Dettingen - Catholic
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/260610?availability=Family%20History%20Library

Sigmaringen – Protestant
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/229545?availability=Family%20History%20Library

LDS Centres
https://www.familysearch.org/locations/centerlocator

Your problem will be in deciphering the records written in old German.
Don´t hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance

Dave

Hi Dave,

Many thanks indeed for your posts & links, very much appreciated.

I have no idea to be honest, although his marriage took place in a Church of England church in London. Whether or not that means he was protestant or not I don't know.

Looks like I am going to have to go to my nearest Family Search Centre, which is in Cambridge. As I don't drive its public transport all the way! Two buses & two trains to be precise! Oh Well, I need to look at the records so I shall have to go as soon as I have saved up enough! ;D

My thanks again for all your assistance, all very much appreciated. Will be in touch if any further assistance needed.

Kind regards

David
