Finding a service number & record.
« on: Sunday 12 November 17 20:23 GMT (UK) »
Hello, hope someone can help. Even though I remember my Dad having some kind of diary/log from his time in the RAF-Coastal Command during WW2, I have no idea where it is now & for a very geeky reason I need to find both his service number & record if possible. He was RAF groundcrew & was an aero engine mechanic, (I'm intending to build a model of one of the types of aircraft he may have worked on & would like to replicate as near as possible)
Any idea as to how to go about it?

 Thanks, Jim.

Hi Jim !

WELCOME to Rootschat!

You've been successful so far ( contacted Rootschat )  ;D

Why not tell us about him?
Name, dates?
You've told us some, what other  service details do you know?

We may be able to get you started?

Blimey, that was quick!

His name was Frank Grainger (pretty sure he was christened 'Frank' & not 'Francis'), born in Bishop Auckland in 1914.
I remember him mentioning being based at Aldergrove, Silloth, Elgin, (Kinloss/Lossiemouth?) & Beaulieu. He never mentioned being in any other units other than Coastal Command. Aircraft he mentioned working on were Liberators, Blenheims, Hudsons, Ansons & Botha's.
Not sure when he joined up but maybe early on. He was a bus mechanic before the war.

Thanks again, It would be fantastic if you could help!
 Jim.

Service Records for personnel serving after 1920 are still with the MOD.
To apply, see: https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records

You'll need his Death Certificate (if he has died) and his date of Birth; a service number is not required.
Cost will be £30, unless he, or your mother, are still alive.
