I'm pleased to say I can give a successfull update to this inquiry:

I've just had a phone call from Molly at Stockton Bereavement Services and she has confirmed that Swires is indeed buried in the old part of Thornaby Cemetery, section A, plot no.E16. There's nothing to say whether or not there is a headstone but, as diggerman2 intimated, she says I should phone to make an appointment for a member of staff to show me the grave. However, as it would mean travelling up and staying overnight, I've no idea when this will take place. The main thing is that, thanks to you all and to the excellent help from Stockton B.S., I now know where my gtgrandfather is layed to rest.
Many thanks,
David

That would be brilliant if you wouldn't mind, dawnkaren. Aparrently, the staff will direct people to the right spot. I don't expect there to be a headstone but I would like to correct that situation eventually.
In the meantime, I hope you have a Merry yet Peaceful Christmas.

Kind regards,

David

I was in Thornaby Cemetery yesterday (30th) and located said grave.
There is no headstone on the grave , i placed a tree branch where the headstone 'would be' and took a photo which i've tried (unsuccesfully) to include into this post - sorry.

For future reference , as you go up the main drive (past the lodge) , go to the 2nd set of 'metal bars' either side of the drive (they look like 'bike shed' things but were used for plants).
At the 2nd set , go diagonally right into the secton on the left (if that makes sense) .
That is 'A' section.
On the front row is a grave 'Denison/McMahon' - that is grave number AA17.
Grave AE16 is four rows back and one to the right (as you face it).

Just to give you an idea - but obviously the best way is to arrange for a member of staff to meet you and locate it for you.

Hi Diggerman2.
How kind of you to check this out, thank you very much indeed.
We're going to visit in the  spring and, if it's acceptable to the staff, erect a simple wooden cross with a brass plaque where a headstone should be. We'll incorporate the visit with a spot of  sightseeing and a nice overnight stop somewhere.
Many thanks again and a Happy New Year to you and to all Rootschatters.
Regards,
David.
