Rochdale marriage 8/3/1837: Where was Ellen Hill resident?
« on: Sunday 12 November 17 22:16 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone bring some local knowledge to bear to decipher where Ellen Hill was resident at the time of her marriage to her brother-in-law, George Burgess, at Rochdale St Chad's on the 8th March 1837, please?  Something Hills.

Thanks.

Hello,
If that is her in 1851 b Walsden, could it be Calf Holes?

Aulus,

An update on your request.  I have looked at Maps of the Period, Street Directories and Census Returns for Rochdale, but I’m afraid no luck.

It did cross my mind however, whether this was a Colloquial Nickname for the area in which Ellen Hill lived.  When I was a kid and lived on Whitworth Road in Rochdale, we used to call Whitworth, “Tally Valley”.  If you look at Maps, Street Directories or Census Returns, you will not find “Tally Valley” anywhere.  The recorder at George and Ellen's marriage, possibly did not know that there was no such place as ???ve Hills.

According to the 1841 Census, the Burgess family were living in Fair View Terrace, in Blatchingworth & Calderbrook, (Ref: HO 107, Registration District: Rochdale, Sub-Registration District: Blatchingworth & Calderbrook, Enumeration District: 6, Piece: 550, Book: 2, Folio: 30, Page: 18).  Blatchingworth & Calderbrook was at the foothills of the Pennines and there well could have been a place around there, known locally as Calve(?) Hills.

Of course, all this is merely conjecture on my part, and I could be completely wrong.

Tina Royal.

Thanks all for your help.

Yes, I think it says Calve Hills which is undoubtedly going to be a variant of Calf Holes.

That’s great. The article and 1851 address would seem to confirm it. I did find it yesterday on an old map just off Calderbank Road, Walsden.
