Ernest Newman living in Middlesbrough in 1901, where did he come from?
« on: Monday 13 November 17 02:36 GMT (UK) »
Thank you all for your good help.

I found Ernest Newman with his wife Eunice and children in the 1901 census in Middlesbrough. His birthplace is given as Aldershot but I can't find a birth record for him. It's not such a big place so I can't fathom why... I did find an Ernest Newman of the right age living with his grandmother in All Saints, Huntingdonshire in the 1871 census, and there his birthplace is given as Basingstoke. This must be the Ernest Newman who went to Middlesbrough, yes?

(Forgive me for any mistakes, I have poor eyesight)

Again, thank you, Jo. It's good to know at least one of the girls was alive and well.

There's a death record for Benjamin T.V. Newman from 1871, he must've died right after the census was taken that year. If that's true, then he cannot be the father of Henry, aged 6 in 1881. The plot thickens!

Benjamin (Thomas Viallis) Newman married Elizabeth Speed 1863, registered in Medway Kent. GRO indexes give the mothers maiden name of Alfred, William and Eliza as Speed (I didn't check the others), a quick look has a public tree on Ancestry for this family that you could possibly contact for further details.

The GRO index for Benjamin T.V. Newman's birth gives his mother's maiden name as Kalls. I can't seem to find a Newman-Kalls marriage anywhere. I'm wondering if it's not mispelt somehow.
