Help with 1697 parish register baptism entry
« on: Monday 13 November 17 14:27 GMT (UK) »
According to Find My Past, this is the baptism entry for Andrew son of John and Ann Sheldon. I'm happy with the names but FindMyPast has a query for the date but to me that seems to be the clearest part! I make it 13th March but I can't quite make out some bits, it looks like...

"Andrew .. (I'm guessing 'son of') John & Ann .. (is that maybe an 'e' on the end of Ann?) Sheldon bapt .. (maybed 'ised'??) 13th March"

Any help appreciated!

Cheers

Paul.

You have most of it.  I would say:

1.  The surname is Sheeldon.

2.  Anne.

3.  ...the 13th March...

4.  If there is an ised on bapt it's in superscript (but I don't think there is).

ADDED:

It would be worth examining some clearer nearby entries to better see what he typically writes between the name of the child and the forename of the father.

I don't see anything resembling son of.

Thank you. I see 'filla' for some of the girls listed so maybe there's a filius in there?? Still working on the other bits!

Maybe 'Ye 13th March'? Seems like that appears elsewhere but I think there is more than one hand involved.

Maybe 'Ye 13th March'?

Not in my opinion.  Others may see it differently.

On the rest of the page, and on the facing page, he typically writes fill or ffill with a contraction mark above, for filius (= son). I think that is what’s written here, but the dot over the i is blotched and has merged with the letter i itself below.

Like HD, I read the date as ... the 13th March.

I also think it’s Sheeldon, or perhaps Sheelden.

Thanks Bookbox, it seems the salient details are agreed between you :D If the name was Sheeldon (or Sheelden) it has come down as Sheldon since the early 1700s as I'm pretty sure it's the right person.

Many thanks both,

Paul

This is the fellow's marriage entry; what do you think his surname is here?
