Martha Tyas
« on: Monday 13 November 17 19:26 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I would like to find the details of the marriage between Martha Tyas and John Hawkesworth which took place 8th Sep 1819 Pontefract St Giles if anybody can help.

I suspect/hope that Martha was a widow as I think she was born Martha Walker in 1787 and married Matthew Tyas/Tyers in 1812. Matthew died in 1818.

Many thanks

Bob

The filmed record of this marriage is on Ancestry. Unfortunately it doesn't confirm the bride or the groom's status -- simply that both are 'of this Parish'.

As you say it was at St Giles, Pontefract and it was by Banns.

Many thanks for that, looking at later censuses I'm sure I am correct, the ages match and place of birth and I can't find a birth of a Martha Tyas in Brotherton (where she says she was born in censuses) around 1787 which is the date of birth she gives.

Thanks

Have you found a Martha Walker baptised with an abode of Brotherton around 1787? I can't immediately see one - but might be missing it of course.

Ah yes -- seen her now on Family Search with her siblings. So on the evidence you have it looks like it was Martha Walker who married for the second time. The location of Brotherton and the surname of Tyas do point towards that.

Her marriage to Matthew Tyas was at Brotherton - St Edward the Confessor - he was a Waterman --- and one of the witnesses was a Charles Walker -- (one of her siblings was named Charles.)

The surname of Tyas is not particularly common and as there is a recorded death for Matthew Tyas - it looks like Martha then married John.

Matthew was 32 when he died and was buried at St Edward the Confessor in Brotherton.
His abode was given as Brotherton, occupation confirmed as Waterman -- and there is a note on the burial entry stating 'accidentally drowned at Selby'. (Just in case you haven't seen this particular record.)

Yes thanks, I think you have come to the same conclusions as I have  :)

Most of the Brotherton entries are on findmypast plus I have copies of the Brotherton registers, b, m and d's. There were many Watermen living in Brotherton in the late 18th/early 19th centuries, many related to each other in one way or other!
