Wood/Laing, leeds west Yorkshire

Hi guys I'm new to all this family history malarkey and while I thoroughly enjoyed tracing my maternal family my paternal side is a lot harder thanks to my all too common surname WOOD.

Can anyone give me a push up the ladder with any information for a James (Jim) Wood who married Joan Laing in leeds in 1949.

The only information I have about parents is one of my great-grandfathers was possibly Anthony since my dad seems to remember being called after one of his grandfathers.

Welcome to Rootschat. The best and safest way to make sure that you are following the correct family (especially as it is after the last census) is to get the marriage certificate. Once you have that, it will give you his father's name and occupation and Jim's age. From that you may be able to find a birth and the family in the 1939 register.

Better to spend £9.25 at this stage rather than go completely wrong as you are working with such a common name.

Do you know when and where James Wood died?

James Wood died in 1985 in Leeds

If he had no middle name(as per his marriage) then this is his death:

 James Wood born 16th March 1920, died December quarter 1985 Leeds

James Wood can then be found in Morley in 1939 with Anthony (1890) and Elizabeth (1880) I think (I do not have full access).

There is this possible birth:
Births June quarter 1920   
 James  Wood  mmn     Taylor    Holbeck    9b   1021   

and possibly this marriage?
Marriages September quarter 1918
Elizabeth Paylor     Holbeck    9b   1103   
 Anthony Wood     Holbeck    9b   1103

But you really need the first marriage certificate to get you started.

There is this birth for an Elizabeth Paylor, but she says she was born in 1880.  As she appears to be 10 years older than Anthony, was she married previously?

If that was the case she wouldn't have married Anthony Wood as Paylor/Taylor would she as that was her maiden name?  Unless of course her maiden name was Paylor and she married a Taylor.
