Liverpool Dock Arrivals 1944
« on: Tuesday 14 November 17 15:25 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out the name of the ship which arrived in Liverpool docks on the 17th March 1944 carrying some 500 plus repatriated British soldiers and from whence it had come. My uncle came home on it and was then taken to a transit camp near Liverpool where they remained until late the following day when they were then able to return to their homes throughout the UK. The ships name and its port of departure would be such a help to my Family Tree information.

Your best bet would be to contact Liverpool Maritime Archives - http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/archive/ - but, unfortunately, they're closed 'til early next year. Failing that, the simplest solution would be to consult Lloyd's List. I've only used it at the LMA but there are other locations available.

Try Arnold Hagues arrivals and departures database at http://www.convoyweb.org.uk/port/index.html?home.php~armain
Far from complete but you may be lucky.
I doubt troop movements would be reported in a newspaper due to war time censorship. I note there were three vessels arriving in Liverpool on 17/3/44.
Be aware that the date of disembarcation may vary by a few days from the ships arrival.

Thanks for your replies very much appreciated. I have seen a Pathe newsreel of a 'ship' arriving with POW's and all the welcoming committee etc, but could not see the name of the vessel. Have a feeling it may have been those from the Far East. Anyway left a message with the Old Mersey Newspapers, surely something would have been noted in the paper about returning troops from Prisoner of War camps. Any clues on the transit camp ?
Thanks again, grateful.

Do you have his army record? The information in his army record may fill in some of the blanks.

There are commercial sites that have Liverpool Echo for 1944, using a free search I can't find anything relevant.

About the video you mentioned do you mean this clip of 'Atlantis':-

As for the location of the camp near Liverpool possibly Knotty Ash Camp.

Always thought that Knotty Ash was a Ken Joke joke, I will now have to Google it. His army record simply says Repatriated arrived Liverpool 17 March 1944. He had escaped from his Campo and finally reached British lines in the south of Italy on the 3 March 1944.
