Finding a death date for John Gallon b1838 in Newcastle

Hi again,

Today i am searching for the death date for;

John Gallon
B: 04 SEP 1838 Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland

Parents;
Robert Gallon 1808-1876
Esther Selby 1807-1891

Spouse;
Sarah Ann Young b1836 in Hull, East Yorkshire
Married 24 Aug 1857 Sculcoates, East Yorkshire

The last census i can see John Gallon on is the 1871 census with his family. in 1881 Sarah is still listed as married but without John at 45 Glasgow St. After that i can't seem to find John anywhere, including for death entries. Sarah passes away in 1915 in Sculcoates, East Yorkshire.

Can anyone help me find John Gallon' death entry? Or if not his death, help me find where he went.

Do you have Sarah's death certificate?
That should say whether she was 'wife' or 'widow' of John (although I realise that if the couple were separated the informant may not know).

Although she's still claiming to be married in 1881 and 1891, Sarah calls herself head of the household which may be an indication that she's not expecting John to come back.

She's "widowed" by 1901.

The 7 people i am posting about are the only people left in my tree upto 7 generations whom with my own eyes can not seem to find death dates for from months of research.

I have been using FreeBMD and A* for the others i have been successful with.

You may have already found this, Tim, but the following marriage notice appeared in the Hull Daily Mail on 7 July 1907:-

SMITH - HOLTBY  July 5th at St John's Church, Newington, John E Smith, eldest son of HL Jarvis and late John E Smith to Ada E, eldest daughter of John and Harriet Holtby and eldest granddaughter of Sarah Ann and late John Gallon, boilermaker, all of Hull.

So it looks as if John was definitely deceased by 1907.

I haven't been able to find a death for him on FreeBMD either, nor can I find him on the censuses after 1871.

Their last child appears to have been the oddly named Plimsoll Gallon in 1878 so I suppose John was alive in 1877.

Plimsoll only means cargo lines on ships to me, so could we be considering the possibility that John went to sea? Pardon my ignorance, but did/do boilermakers go to sea?

Tim, have you gleaned whether John and family were working class or perhaps John had a business that went bust? I ask because I found a Hull newspaper ad from - if I remember correctly - 1867 from a firm called Gilbert & Gallon where the Gilbert partner was dissolving the partnership and going into business with another man. It was something to do with ironworks - so any link to boliermakers or am I grasping at straws ? Sorry, haven't the time to find it again now but thought I'd mention it in case it had any possible relevance.

This is definitely something for me to look over this evening! Once I've made myself a much needed cup of tea; i will sit down to this and try and find a connection. It is odd he disappears from the records all of a sudden.

I thought the same thing when I saw he was a Boiler Maker at Hull.
Boiler Makers DID work on ships (as well as other things) -- and it is possible he went to sea in a maintenance capacity.

There are John Gallons who died at sea -- but on the face of it - not this one.
