Lost family
« on: Wednesday 15 November 17 09:59 GMT (UK) »
Mary Hamilton McLeod married John Murray on the 12th October 1854 in St Cuthberts, Edinburgh. A son, John Mcleod Murray was born in 1856.

John Murray senior arrived in NZ with brothers in 1858 and his son followed in 1866. But what happened to Mary?

Mary was the daughter of John Mcleod (d. 1838) and Jane Deans (likely to be a second marriage for him.) They had three other children, all born St Cuthberts - John McLeod b. 1828, Jane Syme McLeod b. 1830 d. 1833 and Robert Daniel McLeod b. 1832.

John McLeod appears to have had a daughter by a previous marriage - Esther who married James Mowat in 1825.

On his death he was described as a cuttler from college Street.

But where did the McLeod family all go?

I have scoured the census records and scotlandspeople records but cannot find anything about any of these people.

You help would be much appreciated

Hi ,

Could this be the family -
1851 St Cuthbert's Midlothian(FreeCEN)
Jane McLeod 59 widow annuitant b. Glasgow Lanarkshire
Mary M McLeod 2 dau. b. St Cuthberts Midlothian
Robert D McLeod 19 son wine merchts app b. St Cuthberts Midlothian

It would seem unlikely that a 59 year old woman would have a 2 year old daughter  :-\

Added -
The index on SP has Mary's age as 23 , no middle initial.

Archibald Place St Cuthbert's Midlothian
Mary(?) Mcloud 45 independent born Outside Census County
Mary Mcloud 13 b. Midlothian

That's the best match I can find.

Hello Ev

Wow - thank you. Looks like a couple of distinct possibilities.

Certainly Jane's father was from Glasgow so I imagine that she may have been born there.

Well done  ;D

The entry is in FindMyPast but even looking for a visitor (Margaret Anderson age 20)and a servant (Margaret Tennent age 31) listed with them doesn't bring up any matches on Ancestry. Think this is the correct family as John McLeod and Jane Deans had a son called Robert Daniel born in 1832 in Edinburgh.

There is a Robert D Mcleod age 29 born Scotland listed in the 1861 census in Sydenham. His occupation is wine merchant which would tie with the occupation in 1851. Also listed is an Augusta Mcleod age 28 born Paddington. Both shown as visitors, so relationship not clear.

Possible marriage March quarter of 1861 in Kensington Robert Daniel McLeod and Augusta Isaac Samuel. Marriage certificate on a Ancestry shows father of Robert to be John McLeod ( deceased), Surgical Instrument Maker. Augusta's father was Isaac Samuel ( deceased), Merchant

A Mary Hamilton Murray died in Lambeth in 1865 age 37. Gro index says she was 36 but her burial is on Ancestry and that says 37. She died on 28th Feb 1865 and her address was 12 Oxford Terrace, Clapham Road. She is buried in the cemetery of All Saints, st Giles, Camberwell.
Mary is listed at the Oxford Terrace address in 1861 along with 4 year old son John, both born in Scotland. Presumably John joined his father following the death of his mother.
