R removed per AO
« on: Wednesday 15 November 17 17:19 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me what the attachments mean please?

They're for Benjamin Dewson, alias Duson, and included on Ancestry in the UK, Naval Officer and Rating Service Records, 1802-1919 records.

Thanks,

Deirdre

R = Run (deserted)
A.O. = Admiralty Order

His service record shows that he deserted (‘Run’) in Trinidad on 7 October 1807, whilst still under 18 (Boy 1st Class). Having his service record marked R would normally disqualify him from pension rights, but service under the age of 18 was not pensionable anyway.

So probably R. removed per A.O. 27 March 1840 means that an Admiralty Order was issued on that date for the ‘Run’ of 1807 to be discounted and not to tell against his pension entitlement. The pension appears to have been granted anyway by Whitehall (‘W’), on 18 February 1858, calculated on total service of 9 years and 75 days, which seems to fit the dates shown.

Someone more expert may come along to confirm or refute this  :)
