What does "W B S France" mean insofar as a birth place on a census record?

In the 1871 census, John Notman's birthplace is given as W B S France. On the 1881 census, it's given as Paris. What does W B S refer to?

Could it be an N' and not a 'W'?
You often get 'Naturalised British Subject'.

It is NBS i.e. Naturalised British Subject
