MILFORD query
« on: Thursday 16 November 17 16:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi.

I have an Edwin Milford aged 16 in 1881 census living with William Milford 85, Elizabeth 76, Elizabeth 45, Fred John 6 and Lewis 1 at 46 Shaftsbury Cotts, Plymouth.

Fred & Lewis are Grandsons.

Mmn of Fred is CLOW
Mmn of Lewis is LEAR

There is a George Milford marrying Mary Ann Clow in 1855. They are living in the St Thomas, Exeter area with 7 children (youngest = 7).

Frank Potter Milford married Ellen LEAR in 1876.

They (50 and 30) are living in Kenn (Exeter area) with Frank 4 and Ellen Lear 1

In 1841, Frank is living with parents Thomas and Elizabeth (nee POTTER).

Going back to Edwin, in 1871, he is again, living with Grandparents plus the other Elizabeth.

I'm trying to connect George and Frank as brothers but why would 1 grandson be away from the other 2 siblings.

Where are Edwin's parents?? I can't establish a mmn for him.....

Could George and Thomas be brothers ? Given that George marries in 1855 and Frank in 1876 unless one married young and the other much older they would appear to be a generation apart.

given Edwin was b Plymouth I suspect this is his birth

Q1 1864 STOKE DAMEREL  Volume 05B  Page 332

no mother's maiden name given - tends to suggest illegitimacy

1871 has two unmarried daughters at home who could be mother - Elizabeth b c1834 and Sarah b c1846

Think you may be going the wrong way with Lewis, mmn Lear. He's not born until 1883

Lewis b c1880  is with aunt Elizabeth in 1891- b Bawdsey, suffolk, which points us to

MILFORD, NOAH  LEWIS JOSEPH
mmn PHARE
Q3 1879  WOODBRIDGE  Volume 04A  Page 711

William Weeks Milford married Susanna Phare in 1868. 1871 has William and Susanna in Stoke Dameral. He's b c1842 in Northlew, (North Looe?) which matches very well with one of William and Elizabeth's sons

To fill the gaps and strengthen the connection

1881 - William W Weeks b c1842 Northlew is in Bawdsey, Suffok, with three children. No wife listed, but states married. He's a coastguard, hence his being so far away from his birthplace.

1891 - William is a licenced victualler back in Stoke Dameral. Wife is now Jane O Milford

1901 - a brewery stoker, in Stoke Dameral

1905 - William dies

William remarries in 1887. However I cannot locate Susannah on the 1881 census nor a death. Noah Lewis Joseph appears to be their final child

Far more common at that time than people believe
