Query re Invalid Pensioner description on Death Certificate
« on: Thursday 16 November 17 16:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
I have a copy of a relatives death certificate (1920) where his occupation is stated as:
Textile worker; Invalid Pensioner (Altered from State Invalid Pensioner)

He was 42 years old and had been resident in Australia for 8 years. He died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Can anyone enlighten me why this terminology was used for his occupation ??? Not seen before.
Many thanks
KK

It means exactly what it says.  He was an invalid receiving a pension because he was unable to work.

I agree,

If this is for a NSW death cert, then it is a fairly standard informative response.     The TB would seem to be the likely cause for his invalid status.

Thanks for the replies. Yes it is NSW certificate. I am based in UK and just found it quite unusual. Presumably this is some kind of work pension and that is why it has the altered from State invalid pensioner. Is it quite common to have this description on death certificates for invalids in receipt of a pension?
Many thanks
KK

Hi,

It is quite usual for any NSW BDM death certificate to have descriptive information on any of the many headings.

The reference to "State Invalid Pensioner" indicates he had initially received a benefit from the State of New South Wales.   The replacement wording "Invalid Pensioner" indicates that the initial pension had been replaced by the benefit from the Commonwealth of Australia's Invalid Pension.

Explaining the terminology was just what I needed
 Many thanks.
The NSW certificates are so much better than ours here in the UK. I have found them well worth the expenditure. So much information.
