John Hawksworth bn 1820 Brotherton.
« on: Thursday 16 November 17 16:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to find John Hawksworth bn 1820 Brotherton but so far with not a lot of success.I have his baptism, what is most likely him in 1841 and then I have him in 1881.

In 1881 he was 2nd Mate on the vessel SS Airworth, or at least that is the transcription on Findmypast. However looking at the entry I don't think the ship was called Airworth but I can't make out what it should be. I have found vessels named Ackworth, Aldworth, Ashworth, Oakworth, Usworth but am not convinced it is any of those.

I have attached a copy of the census entry, perhaps somebody could come up with the name?

Many thanks

Bob

Ancestry says Ausworth - official number 60995
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Take your pick of these two versions:

Using crewlist.org.uk and the official number - the ship is called Usworth.

Thank you, I hadn't seen the Ancestry version but that certainly looks to be the most likely.

Yes definitely SS Usworth, I have found the crew agreements for the voyages of 1881 (mun.ca/mha) and although very interesting reading they don't give me anymore clues regarding John Hawksworth, who he was married to and where he was in previous and later censuses.

I think he's in Bishop Wearmouth in 1871 - a Mariner, with a wife Sarah, also born Brotherton.

Also present are a son in law with John Hawksworth's married daughter, Hannah Martha aged 25 and 2 grandsons (one named Hawksworth as a christian name).

If you can't find John's marriage to a Sarah in Yorkshire -- check the GRO indexes for the birth of Hannah Martha Hawksworth c 1846 in Yorkshire -- that should give you Sarah's maiden name.

Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Many thanks, that is him in1871. I couldn't find it on Findmypast as it has been transcribed as Hanksworth and Brotherton not mentioned as place of birth.

I will follow up from that information but it will be tomorrow now before I get the chance.

Thanks again.
