Hannah Martha was baptised in 1844 at St Edward the Confessor in Brotherton.

It looks like John and Sarah had at least 2 more children in Brotherton. who sadly did not survive infancy.

In 1851 Sarah Hawksworth aged 28, Mariners Wife, is with 6 year old 'Martha' in Knottingley, Yorkshire. John must be at sea.

(I haven't checked to see if any other children were born elsewhere).

Hello

I've seen mention of that marriage before, the only thing that concerns me is that John's father (John Craggs Hawksworth) didn't die until 1874. Otherwise there is a bap of a Sarah Wetherill with father Richard in Brotherton about the right time, 17th June 1821.

I haven't found any other likely marriage though.

OK, bear with me, please:

John Hawksworth, Mariner and Martha Hunter married - Holy Trinity Hull - 6 June 1818
John Hawksworth, born 24 October 1820, baptised 25 March 1821 - son of John (Waterman) and Martha.
John Hawksworth, Sloopman (father John, deceased) marries Sarah Weatherill - 21 July 1841
Hannah Martha Hawksworth, born 1844 - mmn Weatherill

1871 census - John Hawksworth aged 50, with wife Sarah 49, John Irvine, Hannah Martha Irvine, John Weatherell Irvine and Hawksworth Irvine.

John Craggs Hawksworth, son of William and Mary, baptised 14 April 1789 - Brotherton
John Craggs Hawksworth dies January 1874 aged 83.  Probate to son William Hawksworth of Goole.

John Hawksworth and Hannah Wardle married at Brotherton 14 January 1810 - is this John Craggs Hawksworth?
William Hawksworth, son of John (Waterman) and Hannah, baptised Brotherton 16 April 1813.

1871 census has William Hawksworth, born 1813 in Brotherton,  living in Goole.

Phew!!   :o

Hi again

My thoughts:-

John Hawksworth mar Martha Tyers (nee Walker) Pontefract 8th Sep 1819, not 1818 Hull?

Yes I think John Craggs Hawksworth married Hannah Wardle 1810, Hannah died Brotherton 1819.

Yes William Hawksworth bn to John and Hannah Brotherton.

Could we have two John Hawksworths both son of John although I can only find one in Brotherton.

The marriage to Sarah Weatherill fits in apart from the father deceased bit. wonder if it is a mistake and it is only Richard Weatherill deceased?

I now have Sarah in 1861, 1891 and 1901 and dying 1902, bur Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, the wife of the late Captain John Hawksworth. John Hawksworth died 1886, buried Bishopwearmouth also.

Richard Weatherill bur Brotherton 1824 age 40 yrs.

Sarah Weatherill bap 17th Jun 1821 Brotherton to parents Richard and Hannah.

I hadn't seen the Pontefract marriage.  I only saw the Hull marriage, and John did say that he was a Mariner.  :-\  And that (added) Pontefract marriage would fit in with Hannah's burial on 21 April 1819.

Just as a matter of interest have you obtained John Craggs Hawksworth's will - it might prove interesting  :-\

Also added:

I think you're right that John married twice - Hannah and then Martha.  Looking at baptisms there is a Richard (to John and Hannah) in 1817, who is buried 1818.  Then there is Richard baptised 1827 to John and Martha.

By an amazing coincidence this month's on line Newsletter from the Federation of Family History societies is focussing on finding seamen's records - and where they can be accessed. It's quite a lengthy and informative article.

You can subscribe to the FFHS newsletters here;

http://www.ffhs.org.uk/ezine/subscribe15.php

If you decide to subscribe (and I think it is free) -- you have probably missed this recent one - but if you want to see it just drop me a private message with your email address and I will forward a copy to you.

Hello again

No I hadn't seen the Federation of FHS's Newsletter but over the years I have done quite a bit of research into mariners as my g father served in the Merchant Navy during the early part of the 19th century.

Not sure John Craggs Hawksworths Will is, I presume the details are on Ancestry which I don't have access to.

Otherwise I will dig a bit further and see if I can come up with anything else.

Many thanks

Just found details of John Craggs Hawksworths Will, he left less than 400 so probably it won't tell me a great deal that I don't already know although it does name his grandson as John Leach of Burmantofts.

Forgive me if you already know this but you can order copies of wills made from 1858 onwards on line from here;

https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

The cost is 10 irrespective of the number of pages. You will receive an email notification when the Will is ready to view - and you can save or print it at that point.

Find My Past have many probate lists (and even copies of Wills for certain locations) - for pre-1858. Usually there is a link from the Find My Past website to direct you to the local archives which hold the Will.
