« on: Thursday 16 November 17 20:03 GMT (UK) »
Alexander McIntosh - Shaw will dated 1631 - in this will I know he refers to his brother Donald Roy Shaw - but what I am looking for here is any mention of his wife or any his children - any one that can translate or decipher this will I would be truly grateful - Kind regards Indiana . . .

Scotland is not my area, but I have done what I can.

Note in particular the wording around donald.

I am sure of brother german but not sure of alias (it is a-l-i-a-?).

WOW this is amazing . . .

James was the lawful father to Alex and Donald Roy Shaw . . .

It is the last bit I am not clear on: Alistair Shaw brother German to the said Alex . . .

Is the said Alex the will maker himself or is he referring to Alex brother to Donald Roy's sons . .

There is no lawful sons of: written there . . .

Now seeing the will translated I can understand the time era that it belongs too and the mistakes that many historians make - James Shaw died in the battle of Harlow in 1411 aged 41 - making him born 1370 . . . ?

Alex wrote the will in 1631 . . .

There seems a total slip in generations here . . .

But Horselydown86 what you have given me here is a actual time frame to work off so I can start to place everyone back into the correct time scale and work from there . . .

Many thanks maestro - and I am truly grateful . . .  :)

Having looked again, and more particularly at the record above, I'm in agreement that 1631 is the year.

Accordingly, I have altered my transcript above.

It's far from clear whether there is mention of an Alistair Shaw in the last section.

If the word is alias, then it's donald who is brother german to Alexander.

Before you draw conclusions, wait for the UK to start their day.  There may be better readings of some of the difficult bits.

We do have a specialist in Scottish records, although he's been rather quiet lately.

Well done Horsely Down, a couple of suggestions,  Actions, moneys due? Dalnavert, Parson of Kingussie, Alex Robertson of The Doune?  Wester Straloch, Shaw of Granish, Donald Roy (red headed).
The Shaws lost Rothiemurchus to the Grants in the mid 1500's which caused strife for 20 years, Grant of Rothiemurchus managed to keep the estate supported by the MacGregors who arrived from Perthshire in force!  ;D

Thanks Skoosh, that's very helpful.

I see Wester straloch and granishe now, and will amend the transcript.

The parson/person and dalnavert/delnavert are just a matter of spelling.

I'm sure both the a meanings are intended, but will stick with the e spellings in the text.

I'm not sure about Roy.  It's probably meant to be that but I'm concerned by the difference to the y in day.

Well done the both of you - yus it is Donald Roy as this mention in the history books - Parson even as it would seem strange to refer to someone as just person especially as this is Angus McIntosh we are talking about here - Parson though not to sure as strong Catholics us lot at that time - it is Dalnavert now referred to as Delnavert and I can see what you mean about the alias there was a German but I need to check the history books to see who he was brother too - yus history depicts the McGregors aiding the Grants - I can only presume that they all got over any warings as we all quite happily married into each other families in later days - the Grants and the McGregors - bless . . . : )

It does seem that the Allan Cair/Keir Shaw's as history depicts as there were 2 of them had very little respect for the house of Doune and history could well have done without either one of them - the first Allan giving up his side of papers into the hands of the Gordon's who then sold the house of Doune to the Grants then it is second Allan Cair/Keir Shaw who then goes on to murdering his step father who was either John Dallas of Croy or John Dallas of Cantary - either way I can only say I am so glad to hear he was a bachelor who left no heirs - case rested . . . : )

Indiana Shaw . . .

Dalnavert = Dail nam Feart = might be Field of the grave? I've heard reference to this Parson of Kingussie before.

Dalnavert was apparently the ancestral home of both parents of Sir John Macdonald the Canadian Prime Minister, I think he was born in Glasgow.
I was up in Badenoch at the weekend, first snow of the winter! Brrrrr.

A very scholarly new book on Badenoch,  "The Wild Black Region!" by David Taylor.

Thanks Skoosh - "Field of the grave" sounds interesting . . .

"Yes" I getting info on the Parson of Kingussie too . . .

Dalnavert was interesting as when I went looking for info and photo's came up with this . . .

Dalnavert is a museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in the restored home of Sir Hugh John Macdonald, former Premier of Manitoba and son of Sir John A. Macdonald. The house is an example of Queen Anne Style architecture.

Sir Hugh John Macdonald, PC (March 13, 1850 – March 29, 1929) was the only surviving son of the first Prime Minister of Canada, Sir John A. Macdonald, and was a politician in his own right, serving as a member of the Canadian House of Commons and a federal cabinet minister, and briefly as the eighth Premier of Manitoba

America and Canada are reflections of the people who emigrated there - so finding this is no surprise

So now we also have this . . .

Dalnavert (Scottish Gaelic Dail nam Feart) is a small rural hamlet, that lies 4 miles northeast of Insh, and 8 miles northeast of Kingussie, in the valley of the River Spey, in the west Cairngorms National Park, in Badenoch and Strathspey, Inverness-shire, Dalnavert is the ancestral home of Sir John A. Macdonald, first Prime Minister of Canada. Both his mother and first wife came from Dalnavert.

I have taken note of the book - will delve into that laters . . .

Nice find find mind  ;)
