Jane Harrold Middlesex?
« on: Sunday 19 November 17 17:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm hoping someone will perhaps be able to help me in getting a brickwall cleared.
My 5th grt grandmother was Jane Harrold.
She married Thomas Fallows/Follows in 1812 Hinckley, Leicestershire.
Every census from 1851 to 1871 she lists her birthplace as London, Middlesex and birthdate between 1792-1796 so far I have found no record of a Jane Harrold being born/Baptised in Middlesex/Surrey fitting the timeframe.
The only record I have found of any closeness is a Harriett Jane Harrold bapt 1792 Olney/Padbury, Buckinghamshire. Daughter of Richard Harrold and Elizabeth Drake. This is closer to London than what Leicester is so this could be her but wondering if anyone has records they could check to see if any Janes were in Middlesex fitting mine.

I would suggest that you look into the other Harrold marriages in Hinckley around that time.  These include:

Ann Harrold who was married in 1811 to William Throne. Witnesses Thomas Follows, N Smith

William and Ann Throne were witnesses to Jane Harrold's marriage in 1812 so we might suppose that Jane and Ann were sisters.

Hi
Thank you for your reply, I've just found Ann and William thorne on the 1851 census living in Croft, Leics same place as Jane and Thomas. Ann also lists her birthplace as London and birthdate as abt 1794, So I think they were sisters.

Interestingly though I've found a bapt for an Ann Harrold 17 Feb 1793 Fleckney, Leicestershire parents William and Sarah.
there is also a bapt for a Jane Harrold 13 Apr 1795 Fleckney, Leicestershire parents William and Sarah.
This could be them but I previously thought this was my Jane but there is a burial for a Jane Harrold in leicester st Margarets 22 Apr 1821 birthdate given as 1795 and parents given as William and Sarah, so that looks to be the Jane who was bapt in Fleckney. Sister of Ann? So not sure what to make of that but both Ann and Jane on census say London as Birthplace.

Hi
Have you considered this family in Whitechapel?
John 3 Jan 1789 s of John and Jane
Jane born 8th May 1791
Sarah 5 Dec 1794
All baptised of the Roadside 27 May 1795 indexed as Harford
There is a daughter Ann indexed as Harrad  3 Sep 1788 of Colchester st and also Elizabeth Rachel 11 Aug 1786 of Colchester St ,Samuel May 1785 and Richard 18 Sep 1776 of Ailie ST.
Joseph Harold their son 4 Mar 1774 Roadside.

It would fit both marriages.

Parents seem to have married as Harrad
Joseph and Jane Sherburn 17.12.1769 St Mary Newington Southwark

Hi
Thank you very much for your reply.
No one have not seen this family put given place and dates it seems to fit my Jane. May I ask where you found these records as I could find a baptism for a Jane on FindMyPast or Familysearch.

Just so I'm not confusing myself are John, Jane and Sarah children of John and Jane Harold/Harrad or just John?

And Ann, Elizabeth Rachel, Samuel May, Richard were children of Joseph and Jane.

I noticed it says bapt of the roadside was this a place was it literally meant baptised at the side of the road and not in a church? If so was this whilst family was travelling or did they live on roadside.
Kind regards

Edit* just noticed I was confusing myself, John and Jane I assume are Joseph and Jane in regards to first johns bapt

Thank you for that Shaun, wondered if it was a place or meant actual roadside.
I still cannot see the bapt for Jane Harrad/Harrold on Ancestry either but I've found a burial for a Joseph Harrad 28 Sep 1788 Whitechapel, Middlesex. Birth date given as 1746, this would fit with marriage of 1769 but 1788 is a few years before Janes birth 1791.
Unless of course you did mean that John and Jane were different from Joseph and Jane and were the parents of Top 3 and Joseph and Jane of the bottom children.

You could look at naming conventions for clues to their childrens' grandparents' names - see https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/British_Naming_Conventions

My guess is that Jane & Ann's father was a soldier.
