missing medals
« on: Monday 20 November 17 00:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Just googled my ancestor, as I do every now again, just to see if any new info has come around.
To my surprise his WW1 medals and death penny are up for sale.
My question is I know they have not been in possesion of close family, so where could they have been all this time?
Many thanks

Many people didn't want reminders of the War, and sold off medals.
Or sold them on in times of need.
Or they could have been stolen, at any time in the last 100 years?

Good morning,

I read a few years back of ex servicemen who used to "pawn" their medals at the local pub. They got beer in return. On payday they got their medals back but by the end of the week were pawning them again.

I don't know how many pints a landlord would allow on the value of the medals. Not many I should think.

Thank you for you replies John915 and KGarrad.

I think I have an idea where they have been, after having a chat with one of my uncles.
We dont think they were stolen or pawned on a weekly basis !

Many thanks
