Baxters of Hansons Bridge Road, Birmingham
« on: Monday 20 November 17 19:48 GMT (UK) »
A bit of a long shot, but I would be interested in contacting anyone related to the Baxter's of 157 Hansons Bridge Road, Birmingham. A family of the name Baxter were thought to be there until 1981. I am particularly interested in George William Baxter.

The interest stems from my Great Grandfathers sister, Emily White (born, 1873). She lodged with the Baxter's at a number of addresses from the 1920's onwards, the last address been Hansons Bridge Road, where she was living with the Baxter's when she died in 1955. George William Baxter was the informant of her death and the person who organised her cremation.

As a family, we are intrigued as to what the link is between Emily and the Baxter's and how she came to lodge with them for what appears to be over 30 years, Emily was quite a bit older than George William Baxter.

Did she work for them I wonder as a nanny or a domestic helper.

Was she there in 1939 with an occupation listed?

In 1939, they were all living at 30 Beales St (as they had done since 1920).

Emily (a Charwoman) and the Baxter's, George William (Rubber Process Worker), Eva Georgina (unpaid domestic duties) and Herbert W (electrician). From 1920 to 1928, there was just George W Baxter and Emily listed as living at 30 Beales St.

Eva (b 1890), was older than George by 6 years and didn't appear in the household until 1929, Herbert was born in 1923.

In the 1939 register, Eva and Herbert are listed as single, no status was given for George or Emily. I think Eva may be Herbert's mother. There is a marriage record in 1922 for a George W Baxter and a Eva G Jones!

Doesn't quite make sense but if Eva and George married in 1922 why is Eva single in 1939 - and why does she not appear with George and Emily if she was his wife ???

Address for both parties 30 Beales Street so where did she go if not listed in the household for the next 7 years.

Just wondering Emily White is living just with George Baxter so could this be a different George to George William say his father?

That's a thought I had, but the address given when that happened was 30 Beales St. The info was found by my father from the electoral registers (I think) at Birmingham Library, there is a possibility that Eva G just never registered herself. The 1939 Register is a mystery though, she is definitely listed as single.

Herberts birth on the BMD's lists the mothers maiden name as Jones.

Looking in the census's of 1901 and 1911 for George Baxter the one that seemed to match (ie born in 1896 in Birmingham) listed his father as William, doesn't mean I have the right one though. A marriage certificate for George William and Eva Georgina, should list his father.

Still, there was connection between Emily and the Baxter's for over 30 years, if there is anyone left that would remember her this may depend on friends or on Herbert having children. After leaving Hansons Bridge Road, George William died in 1984, Eva died in 1991 and Herbert in 1999.
