Arthur William BURGESS - my 2 times great uncle
« on: Tuesday 21 November 17 20:16 GMT (UK) »
Arthur was born in Oct/Nov/Dec Qtr 1870 in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire to William BURGESS (1833-1912) and Emma ALCOCK (1835-1910).  Arthur's father was a Canal Shipping Clerk.  Arthur was their 8th child.

What I know:
1871 Census - 8 mths living with family at 19 Walter Street,Salford
1881 Census - 10 year old school boy living with family at 5 School Street, Salford
1891 Census - unable to locate
1901 Census - 30 years, single, living with parents at 2 Carlton Street, Salford.  Occupation Merchant Seaman.
1911 Census - unable to locate
WWII Search - unable to locate
The 1939 Register - unable to locate
Marriage Record - nothing
Death Record - nothing

Arthur is the "brick wall" of this family.  Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers . . . Chris

Given his occupation in 1901, I would guess that he may be at sea in 1891 and 1911.

Thanks for that information regarding Arthur.  I must have missed that Death Registration Index.

Does anyone know of a UK Merchant Navy Register that maybe would show if Arthur continued in this service beyond 1901?

Cheers,
Chris

I looked at that one Carole, but if his DOB there is correct it doesn't fit with "Arthur was born in Oct/Nov/Dec Qtr 1870"

Another one bites the dust!!

That 1953 death could possibly be this guy who could be the one on the 1939 register.  The Barton RD covers Irlam

Could he have either died at sea or jumped ship or just emigrated?

Have you found deaths for his parents and then looked for possible wills? If they left wills and mentioned him, that will narrow down when he died.
