I notice that his fathers death in 1912 was registered in the Barton on Irwell RD but no will found

No wills for either of his parents.  Mother, Emma died first.  Father died 2 years later.

One point of interest is that maybe Arthur was living in Barton Upon Irwell, as both his parents died there and his sister died there 10 years earlier.

But the Arthur Burgess on the 1939 Register certainly doesn't have a birth month of either Oct Nov or Dec 1870.

I have searched the free Merchant Navy records, and no luck there.

There was a marriage of an Arthur William Burgess in Salford in the 4th Qtr 1901 to either a Mary O'Brien or an Elizabeth Doolan.  Not sure if this is my Arthur William, as there was another Arthur William Burgess born in Salford in 1880 who could be the bridegroom to either of these ladies.

The marriage in 1901 was to a Mary O'Brian Salford Register Off ice or Registrar attended.

Could he have either died at sea or jumped ship or just emigrated?

Hi CarolW

Thanks for your ideas about Arthur.  He could have emigrated or was lost at sea etc.  He also could have still been at sea in the Merchant Navy when the 1939 Register was taken, too.

I will chase up the details of Mary O'Brien/O'Brian to see if I can find her in the 1911 Census in Salford.

Thanks also to everyone for their input.

Cheers . . Chris

He would have been 69yrs old by then so less likely but not impossible
