David Marshall Veitch
« on: Tuesday 21 November 17 23:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I'm looking for the final resting place of my great great grandfather, David Marshall Veitch. He drowned in the Thames in 1915 and his address recorded on his death certificate was "20 Berwick Street, Soho". He wasn't from London - his family all from Edinburgh - and i believe he took a job in London because of financial pressures at home. Assuming he was buried in the parish where he lived, and belonging to the church of scotland, i expect he was buried in a protestant church in Soho.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Neil

His death was registered in the December qtr - do you have his actual death date?  If it was late December - any burial may not have been until January 1916 given there would have had to be an inquest.

Hi Neil

Burials in London churchyards stopped circa 1853 due to overcrowding. Burials after that date would be in cemeteries.

If I had to suggest somewhere, it would be Hanwell

I think there's a cemetery register of some sorts at the Westminster Archives. I can check this for you either this week or next.

I checked the burial register, he doesn't appear to be at Hanwell.

So I looked at the Mortuary register and he is listed, the inquest was dated 12 November but there is no mention of where he was buried.

I had a look for a newspaper report and found one, I will get you a copy next week.

No mention of a burial but his son William gave evidence so I'm wondering if he is buried nearer to him at Wimbledon.

The trouble with London Burials is there are a lot of possibles but very few records in number online.

Thanks Dawn! Not an easy one to track down it seems. What was the name of the newspaper you searched? I did not know that his son was in Wimbledon.

Oh many thanks. Didn't see that reply. Would you be able to send me a copy of the notice? I don't have access to that newspaper.
Many thanks,
Neil
