Elizabeth KNIGHT b. c. 1827/8 but can't find baptism
« on: Wednesday 22 November 17 00:09 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor Elizabeth KNIGHT married William EVANS in 1849 at Lydeard St Lawrence. She is shown as the daughter of William Knight and she lives in Lydeard St Lawrence. (Her groom is listed as EVENS, btw.) She would appear to be the Elizabeth Knight aged 13 and living with William and Frances (MEARS) KNIGHT at the LSL poorhouse on the 1841 census. I can find the baptisms of all the other children but Elizabeth's is a mystery. There's a suitable gap between William and Frances's marriage in 1826 (at St Mary's, Stogumber) and the birth of the next child James in 1829 (also at Stogumber) but no Elizabeth to fill it. The rest of the children were baptised at LSL.

Incidentally, after William Knight's death in 1841, Frances married Thomas WHITEFIELD, and on the register it appears that her son James may have given her away and is listed as the bride's father. Is this unusual?  Frances was illegitimate so that may be a reason for her son to step up.

Hi,

I'm looking for a James Knight from about the same time. He would be my 4x great grandfather. He was a corn merchant and married a woman named Mary Sutherland. He had a son (also James) born around 1845 in Newmachar Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Any information you have would be helpful.

1st for MiniHistory;
I cant find anything for Elizabeth and as you say all the other children have Baptisms that are easy to find.

I presume you know Joan MEER married Richard BURNAT 22 Dec 1812, St Martin, Elworthy

Baptised same Church was;
FRANCES Meer 11 April 1802, Mother JOAN
Then at St Lawrence with Brompton, Lydeard St Lawrence;
GEORGE Meer 18 Jul 1806,  Mother JOAN, abode Elworthy

Aah you likely have this as Joan is lodging with the Knights in 1851 Census.

Richard/Joan had Bapt Lsl;
ANN MARIA and JOHN Burnet 04 Dec 1814

Joan Burnett was buried 26 Feb 1854 age 78

Trish :)

Hi again Cory,
I see James and children in 1861 Scotland Census.

I see Mary married 1868 from a Tree. Are you descended from her?

You need to look for a Burial for James c 1818 on Scotlandspeople after 1861.

Hi Trish,

Thank you so much! I am new to this, so I'm not familiar with all the websites and resources, so your suggestions and information were very helpful.

I descended from the illegitimate child of James Knight Jr (b. about 1845) and Margaret Shearer, so descendant from James and Mary Sutherland as well. At least I think so based on the Extract Decree from Oct 22, 1874. James was found to be the father of my 2x great grandmother by the courts and ordered to pay "ailment" to Margaret Shearer, but I'm not sure how the court would have determined that James was the father.

Thanks again!
Cory

Yes no DNA tests then! I suppose it was a small place and people knew what James/Margaret may have been up too!

Hi Trish. I had to reacquaint myself with a few details - that's Christmas for you. I guess Elizabeth's baptism will remain a mystery for the time being. Thank you for your help.
