CAMBRIDGE family, Clonakilty, Co Cork, Ireland 1920's
« on: Wednesday 22 November 17 13:53 GMT (UK) »
Hello

My grandmother, Ella Francis Cambridge was born and raised in Clonakilty. Her family, Protestants, fled north at the time of the War of Independence/Civil War. She would have been in her early 20's at that time.

Any suggestions as to how I find out about the family and their history in Clon?

Many thanks!

Could this be her in 1901 ("Elen Frances", aged 11)
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Clonakilty_Urban/Georges_Street/1095972/

She appears to be in Antrim by 1911, a schoolteacher
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Carncastle/Corkermain/194529/

Her father, mother, and one sister are still back in Clonakilty in that year:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp
you can see many records for the family here.
Ella married in 1920 to Henry Brennan
sister Sarah Cambridge married 1919 to Thomas Bew
Father Robert was still about at this point as he witnesses both marriages.

 - a search here shows a Robert Cambridge who died in 1926:
Quote
Cambridge Robert of Buncrana Waterloo Larne county Antrim and Georges Street Clonakilty county Cork and of 130 Dunluce Avenue Belfast sheriff's officer died 29 April 1926 at latter place Probate Belfast 11 October to Sarah Jane Cambridge the widow

and Sarah died in 1930 with two married daughters administering her estate:
Quote
Cambridge Sarah Jane of 6 Allworthy Avenue Belfast widow died 3 April 1930 at The Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast Administration Belfast 15 May to Sara Bew and Ella Frances Brennan married woman.

Mother Sarah Jane was Patton before she married.
John George Reuben born 1884
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1894/02244/1844906.pdf
Ellen Francis born 1890
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1890/02424/1902875.pdf

I think Sarah Jane is his second wife and his first was possibly Jane Reily, need checking.

Robert appears to have become a Sheriffs Officer between his marriage  1877 and the birth of his daughter Eliza Jane in 1882
There could be earlier children.
This looks like his first marriage where he is a farmer, with the middle name of Sutton

A late reply. My grandmother Maria Jane b. Dec 11 1880 was the 3rd of 6 children by first marriage to Jane Reily. Both she and Eliza Ann left for UK to become nurses. Maria Jane ‘Cissie’ married my grandfather WH ‘Bill’ Kingston Aug 1 1912 travelling to Clonakilty to marry but lived in Barnet Herts
