George Joseph Ellis Johnstone
« on: Wednesday 22 November 17 15:07 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for details of the family of George Joseph Ellis Johnstone who I believe was born in Gorey in Jersey in 1879.
Not having much success. Are there special sites of Channel Island Genealogy.
Would be most grateful for any help/advice.

Welcome to rootschat

Do you have his marriage certificate as that should give information on his father.

Thanks for replying Rosie. Sadly no certificate.  I know from the 1911 Census that he says he was born in Gorey, Jersey.  I was hoping to find details of his birth without having to obtain the certificate.

I could be way off on this but on the 1881 Channel Islands census there's a George J E MOSES b 1879 living at Gorey Pier with his grandparents Joseph T and Mary A MOSES.

I think his parents were Mary Ann Jane MOSES (their daughter) and George Ellis MOSES (son of George Edwin MOSES) b 1856 Anglesey. George is on the 1881 census in Tranmere Cheshire and listed as a widower.

Makes you wonder if George J E was subsequently "adopted" by a Johnstone family or something.

Just a maybe. :) Welcome to RootsChat from me as well.

Maureen

There is a George Joseph Ellis Moses in the St Martin birth indexes (Gorey is partly in the parish of St Martin) between 1873 and 1884, it is on page 46 which would make it about half way through the time covered by the register.

It may be worth browsing the Chatham Parish registers for the marriage.  Unfortunately at the moment MedwayCityArk website is down.
