What happened to Jane GODDING nee Thatcher?
« on: Thursday 23 November 17 05:16 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find out more about Jane Godding nee Thatcher.

What I know so far:
John Godden was baptised on 4 October 1789 in Huntspill, the son of John and Jane Godden. He was transported to NSW in 1809 and died in 1839.

His parents' marriage:
John Godding married Jane Thatcher (both of this parish) by banns on 18 April 1789 in Huntspill. Witnesses were Henry and Ann Palmer.

His father's death:
John Godden P(auper?) was buried on 18 February in Huntspill

I haven't been able to find any other children for this couple, or a death or remarriage for Jane.

(There was another John Godding bapt 28 August 1789 in Chard, also with parents John and Jane, but he belongs to another family. He is listed as a Chelsea Pensioner, service 1809-1831 with the Fourteenth Regiment of Foot.)

Any leads gratefully accepted :-)

Using Freereg
There is a James Godwin bap 20 May 1804 at Huntspill Somerset parents John and Jane.

possibly a transcription error.

The witnesses to the marriage are of no help, Henry Palmer signed at every marriage in Huntspill, so he was either the parish clerk or a willing witness for payment.

Try email to the Somerset archives perhaps they have poor law records for Huntspill as John was listed as a pauper when he was buried. 1805.

Thanks amondg, very promising as James is a family name. I hadn't thought of Godwin as an alternative - I've tried Godding, Goding, Godden etc. I checked the actual record - it's not mistranscribed but could be have been misheard.

Thanks for the info about Henry Palmer, I won't waste any time on him :-)

Thanks also for the Somerset archives info. Poor Jane must have found life difficult with her husband dying a pauper. No wonder son John turned to crime!

Wading through the Huntspill registers I came across a population count in 1801 which says that there were 5 members of John and Jane Godwin's family living in Huntspill at the time. I take that to mean there were 3 children but I can't find baptisms for any of them. Can anyone help?
