I was searching the Census yesterday and came across the indexed entry for a 73-year-old woman whose occupation was "Training for Domestic Service".  My mind boggled, so I looked at the original return.  The person was aged 13.  It made me smile, but I can never get over how gormless some of the transcriptions are.  I know transcribers are meant to write what they see, but surely common sense should play some sort of part in the task?!

Odd as it might seem common sense doesn't play a part in transcribing.
Transcribers write what they see. Being inventive would only lead to more mistranscriptions than there already are.
Maybe the transcriber thought she was a late developer.

my generation was taught to write a number one with a foot at the bottom and a small tick at the top LH side = 1.  A number seven was started with a small upright stroke attached to a wavy navy horizontal line.  "From the reference to "wavy navy" it might be deduced that I was educated in a seaport.

I quite agree, I always use the crossed continental 7, it is particularly helpful when recording financial  figures.

I heard that was how Pearl Harbour was bombed.
Instead of putting
2      as being Priority 2
the put
Roman Numerals  1and1 and it looked like 11 as being Eleven, non priority.
Of course it was kept quiet.

Unfortunately, people still confuse Roman numerals.  11 is eleven;  2 in Roman is II  i.e. people are supposed to used capital letters, not numbers.
In Brisbane there is a hospital named Queen Elizabeth II Hospital.  It's usually referred to as QE2 but some people put QE11 thinking they are giving it Roman numerals

Just thinking about QE11 as in 11th  ... now just who was 3rd, 4th, ..... 10th ... which reminds me of a friend, a retired school teacher ... A young confused student once asked her for help to find out names of books about the unknown World War... as in WW11 being the mistaken for eleventh, and mixing up with Roman numerals to arrive at X being the one before II ....

Actually we should be using "Times New Roman" script  to get the correct roman capitals. 

Most places don't have this readily available and people don't think to use that  either. 

 WWII  And WWI     see easy.

 Just use the font face option .... if available

But the stories are funny....
