John William HOTCHON
« on: Thursday 23 November 17 15:00 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I am interested in John William HOTCHON who on the FindMyPast 1910 Electoral Register was living at 9 Annies Grove, Scarborough Street, South Newington, Sculcoates, Yorkshire.

I have already checked the 1911 Census (Selina Hubert/Huberth and Whitfield children from her first marriage) and the 1901 Census (9 Annies Terrace, Hardcastle family), but I've not been able to link him to either family.

I am specifically interested in the HOTCHON surname, in order to locate a William HOTCHON, a mariner, but I have no other info about him.

Best wishes,
Paul.

There is no John W Hotchon showing on free bmd - do you know what other spellings are common for the surname?

Added:
Could it be Hotchin?

Yes I know -- Hotchon could be Hotchin or Hitchon, but I suspect is it probably Hodgson, of which there are many...

If he could be found on another Electoral Register, possibly an earlier one than 1910...

Best wishes,
Paul.

Hi
The records for the area give two John William Hotchins in Sculcotes
One born 1887 ,the son of Samuel and Sarah is a general labourer and petty crook.
He joins the Army in 1905 and 1908 but between that is up in front of the bench for braking and entering, burglary ,obstructing a police officer .
By 1911 he is single but goes on to have a wife Annie Hotchin who he married 1929 and a son Eric.
He works in the shipyards so could be described as a mariner I suppose.

The other John William Hotchin 1872-1923 is also a labourer born in Batley s of John and Hannah Hotchin and has a wife Sarah Elizabeth Steeley married 1892 .Again he mentions shipping in his occupation.

Does either strike a bell?

Hi CiderDrinker,

Thanks for that info.  Sadly I don't know if the JWH on the 1910 Electoral register could be either of these men, but thanks for trying.

I'm specifically interested in a William Hotchon, mariner, who was supposedly married to Barbara Alice Irwin c.1886-1936; she remarried in 1918 and was shown as a widow.  I came across this JWH on the FindMyPast 1920 Electoral Register, and wondered if it was the same man, due to the same spelling of the surname...

Best wishes,
Paul.
