It's not rebooted itself in safe mode has it?  I seem to recall the default resolution for that is 800 x 600.  Perhaps it got itself in a muddle during a big update.  To start normally you need to repeatedly press a specific key - often F2 but depends on computer - to interrupt boot sequence during startup.

Yes Jan that's my understanding...I would go into display and reduce the screen resolution....haven't done it for a long time but I think the standard is 650.
Posts crossed.

I had the same problem, yesterday. No 1 son was visiting so we tried changing the Display with some success with reducing the large size.  But did no more about the elongation until No 2, the IT son, comes.  Regards, Gazania

If everything has increased then Jan's solution should work - the size depends on your monitor size and a recommended size is suggested - my laptop is 1366 x 768 but my desktop is different.

This is how to change in Win10 but other OSs are the more or less the same:

Changing the screen resolution has worked and the print is now clearer than it was when it 'went big' so to speak. When everything enlarged the print was fuzzy round the edges.

I wonder what Windows did to have this effect on random computers.

Me neither, it does seem to behave itself better than Windows, especially Windows 10 which is the one that finally made me change!

Seemingly Windows 10 is just replacing display drivers with what it thinks is best. Temporary fix is to roll back the driver to the previous version. How you stop Win10 forcing a new driver on you when you don't want it, I don't know.

Yay for Win8.1! :D

Strangely this also happened me at about the same time as the OP. How odd.
I was on the phone at the PC chatting to a friend when the screen went black and came back in what looked to me like safe mode, but was a much lower resolution. For those oldies, it was a lot like looking at Windows 95.

There was some big Windows update last night which may have fixed it, but it was really annoying.
