Looking at a will of 1682 for Thomas Hughes, I am unsure of the following wording
"Thomas Hughes of the illeg in the King's service overseas...."

Apart from its literal meaning, I wondered if anyone else has come across the wording/phrase and can offer a more accurate interpretation, before I  splash out money to get a copy from Nat Archives and have it interpreted.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Is this the reference you're looking at? ...

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C5622172

Without seeing the image it can only be guesswork, but I suspect illeg may be a mistranscription of Reg (for Regiment, with a fancy capital R), which may be preceded by a number?

Only guesswork, so best to view the image if you can.

Thank you Bookbox and Josey for your lightning fast replies!
Military service looks entirely possible and I will try and decipher the regimental number. If it coincides with conflict in Virginia c 1682 that would be a great leap forward.
Thanks again for your interest.
