HYRDESS
« on: Friday 24 November 17 22:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am a direct descendant of Socrates Samuel Hyrdess who came to Australia in 1839 with his children, one of them Marlina America Riedsel Hyrdess was my gg grandmother. I know Socrates came to Australia without wife and older son as they had passed away, his wife's name was Ann Davis. I think they resided in Stepney. I am looking for any information regarding his wife and son, how they died and where they are buried. I know from records that their son John George Socrates Duthon Hyrdess was buried at St Dunstan Stepney.

If there is anyone that could help me with further information I would be grateful, also if there is anyone that requires any other information on the HYRDESS line, please send me a message.

Thank you in advance
Stella De Zen-Cook :) :)

Welcome to Rootschat

To find the cause of death - you would have to buy a copy of the death cert
www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Deaths March qtr 1839  (2 transcriptions)
HYRDESS    George John Duthin Socrates        Stepney    2   339
Hyrdess    George John Socrates Duthon        Stepney    2   339

Nothing for Ann so if she died before 1.7.1837 there will be no death cert

George was baptised February 1824 - Socrates was a school master

George was buried 18.1.1839 St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, Tower Hamlets as John George Socrates Duthon Hyrdess aged 15

1841 - Friars Street St George the Martyr
There is an Andrew Hyrdess, 65, born in Ireland
Elizabeth Hyrdess, 60, not born in county
George Bingham, 5, BIC

This would be the George Bingham Hyrdess who mentioned by Garstonite.

Andrew Hyrdess married Elizabert Larter, 9 Nov 1798, St Leonards Shoreditch.

1841 as per previous census shown - This actually shows F for foreign, not I for Ireland.

Elizabeth d. 1843 London

1851 - George Street, St Dunstan Stepney
George William Hyrdess, 71, head, Germany British Subject
Emma Hyrdess, 72, wife, Surrey
John Andrew Hyrdess, 77, brother, German British Subject
George Charles Hyrdess, 15, nephew.

Andrew John Hyrdess, died 1856 Bethnal Green.

Gorge Charles Bingham Hyrdess marries Emma Sarah Hobbs 1857, father is shown as Francis Bingham Hyrdess - a probable brother of Socrates.

A sister Emilia Sophia Hyrdes d/o Andrew & Elizabeth is born 31 Oct 1813 in Whitechapel. It would be assumed that there are several more siblings between 1798 and 1813.

Socrates Samuel Hyodess married Ann Davies, 17 Dec 1822, St Dunstan Stepney.

There is also a baptism for a Rosa Ann Dew Hyrdess, 29 May 1825, Kennington St Mark, d/o Socrates Samuel & Ann, School master of Belmont Place, Wandsworth Road. The next entry is for George John Socrates Du Thow Hyrdess, s/o Socrates Samuel & Ann, school master of Gordon House. Strangely, as per CaroleW posted, George John Socrates Duthon Hyrdess was also baptised in Feb 1824?

Thank you to all that contributed information especially Ann Hyrdess's death date, she must have died several months after her 15 year old son John George Socrates Duthon Hyrdess passed away.

Socrates Samuel Hyrdess had a daughter Rosa Ann Dew Hyrdess who unfortunately after arriving in South Australia became pregnant, father of child did say he would marry her, but renigged on his promise, moments after birth of female infant child Rosa tragically killed the baby and had her two sisters one of them my gg grandmother, to dispose of the body along the Torrens river in Adelaide. People found the baby and there was a big trial in Adelaide where she was sent to Adelaide Gaol along with her sisters. Her sisters where set free, Rosa had to spend her sentence in Gaol. She later went to New South Wales where she married Richard Stocker and had 5 more children.

Some of the posts I already knew, thank you so much for your quick replies and research.

Kind regards

Stella  :) :) :)
