"In the street"

Hi peeps

Been looking at the ERs for Berkshire on Ancestry and there are a number of people who, in the "Description of Qualifying Property" column (last column on the right), are said to be living "in the street" or "by street", without actually naming the street. 

Anyone any ideas why they are listed like this, rather than with a street mentioned?

I have looked at four maps 1900-1932 and none of them give a name for the main road thro' Harwell, I wonder if the main road was simply known as "the street"

Added, burrs lane, church lane, jennings st are all named and lead off the main road, so I hope I'm in the right place.

It think it probably is Main Street that they're talking about, but it seems a rather unorthodox way of describing it. 

On the 1901 census my Goodwin in living on Main Street; on the 1911 census he has no street address, just "Harwell", the same as his near neighbours.
