Tart family of Lydd
« on: Saturday 25 November 17 23:02 GMT (UK) »
I am beginning to research this family and already can get back to the late 1700s. However I understand that it is believed they were Huguenots but early enquiries cannot trace that this is so and the name is not listed as a Huguenot name. Any pointers as to possible sources of information?

It's interesting to look at familysearch to see the geographical distribution of the name TART in Kent over the years.  Many seem to come from the Faversham & Sittingbourne area.

The Romney Marsh baptism index shows the earliest TART baptism in 1809.

https://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/MIs/MIsLydd/MIsLydd.htm
lists a Richard TART born /baptised 22nd January 1795

An online tree says the name is a variant of TAIT or TATE.

So no evidence of Huguenots so far.

I have got back to another Richard Tarte in 1766. I have read that the name came from either Tarte or Terrence and that they were Huguenots who arrived in that part of Kent and settled. It is frustrating that I can find no mention of the name in any of the usual Huguenot resources.

Your Tart Surname could well have been a local corruption of the Huguenot names of

TARgeT,       TabART,         TestART         or even        Tantarin.

Good Luck with your quest. :)
