Elizabeth Jackson
« on: Sunday 26 November 17 08:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone

I've been searching for a death for my ancestor Elizabeth Jackson (nee WATT)

Elizabeth emigrated to NSW Australia sometime after 1881 with her husband Archibald & her younger children...Her son William Jackson & his wife Jane (nee LITHGOW) followed a short time later...William & Jane had 7 children in NSW. When Archibald died in 1905 Elizabeth seems to fall off the grid, as does William, Jane & there children...I recently found a death for William Lithgow Jackson on the N.Z. BDM & I'm now wondering if William, Jane & family emigrated to N.Z. taking the elderly Elizabeth with them. Not sure where to start on this as the N.Z. BDM doesn't give parents names for comparison...can anyone help please

The William Lithgow JACKSON you found, died 27th October 1946, aged 61. Could he be one of Elizabeth's grandchildren?

Hi

The above William Lithgow JACKSON was a son of William JACKSON and his wife, Jane, nee LITHGOW.

Extracted from a New South Wales birth certificate (showing on an online tree) :
William Lithgow JACKSON - b.  4 June 1885 at Lambton, NSW
Father:  William - aged 26 years - occ: Miner
Mother: Jane, formerly LITHGOW - 23 years    ... both born Scotland
Other children of union :  1 x female (living) - 1 x female and 1 x male, deceased
---
Approx Birth years :

William JACKSON (father of above WLJ) = bc 1859
Jane JACKSON (mother) = bc 1862    ... married Scotland - 1881

The parents of above ^ William JACKSON (bc 1859) >
Archibald JACKSON - bc 1835
Elizabeth JACKSON (nee WATT) - also =bc 1835
[Source:  Online tree which doesn't give further info on any of their other children, nor does it include dates of death for Arch. & Elizth.]

... incidentally, both JACKSON boys married in New Zealand.

William JACKSON - Margaret ROGERS -- Year:  1912
This info is courtesy of an online tree which has William's marriage cert appended.  Note he seemed only to use the name William JACKSON (without "Lithgow") whilst in NZ ... and that applies to listings on electoral rolls.

Brother David Lithgow JACKSON more easily found, and first appears on NZ electoral rolls in 1914 when living near to Palmerston North.
He married 1918 to Gertrude Mary DEMPSEY, and was last residing in the South Island shortly before his death.
----
Kim ...

But just because these two were found in NZ, doesn't necessarily follow that they'd lived here for a long time or that they had arrived with their parents.  ;)
Being Australian-born (British subjects, as they were known back in those days), meant they were able to come to NZ quite freely (bypassing any immigration regulations).   The same would have applied to their Scotland-born parents who had already formally emigrated to Australia in 1881.
And that being so, there probably won't be a record of them entering NZ ... though sometimes persons can be found on the Trans-Tasman shipping lists.  [See FamilySearch website for NZ Passenger Lists. ]

So, as already mentioned, we need to have at least names and approx. birth years of all known children of William and Jane JACKSON to assist us in finding info for you.  ;)

If you search for "Lithgow Jackson" at Archway

https://archway.archives.govt.nz/

You will find bankruptcy proceedings for David, 1929 to 1934, and an inquest for William, 1946.

May have found deaths in NZ for the parents of William Lithgow JACKSON.  ???
A bit more sorting to do yet.

Kim ... working backwards from "the known" in order to find Elizabeth.
I sometimes think the "JACKSON" surname is as bothersome as hunting down anyone named "SMITH".   ;D

*   Interested to know at this stage, whether Jane /William JACKSON had a son named James (first or second christian name)  ???
